| Ares and Mikael are admitted to Temple Mercenaries after a test of skill against B-rank soldiers. Both pass easily and find themselves assigned to the same unit. Baroona and Gohue join them. Ares and Mikael wield swords, Baroona - another strong fighter - uses two linked daggers, and the cowardly artist Gohue provides comic relief. The king of Chronos has neglected his duties, and neighbouring states contemplate invasion. Temple Mercenaries are hired by Chronosian general Icarus for a pre-emptive attack against Minos in cooperation with their ally, Siliponica. There, the four meet Ariadne, Ares’ future girlfriend, and her bodyguard, the young, able Helena. During the invasion, Ares protects Ariadne, winning the respect of the initially antagonistic Helena. Mikael and Baroona attract the attention of Icarus when Mikael defeats a champion of Minos. The battle strategies of Icarus win against Minos, and he is sent to negotiate with the Radnik Alliance, a consortium of countries at Chronos' western border. Icarus knows he is being sent to his death while rivals plot wresting power from the weak King. His troops are detained on other duties, and he must travel with different escort. Icarus does not trust the replacement troops, and he hires Mikael and Baroona as personal bodyguards. Mikael and Baroona recommend Ares and Gohue as well. The leader of the Radnik alliance has red eyes, similar to a dark figure in Ares' past, and Ares confronts him. They survive this encounter, retreat, and Mikael, Baroona, and Ares defeat an ambush staged by the traitorous replacement troops. They return to the capital to find Icarus declared dead and usurpers persecuting those loyal to the old king and Icarus. Icarus stops the civil war with notably minimal losses. He declines then accepts the offered kingship of Chronos and turns his attention to the Radnik Alliance. He wins against their greater numbers with greater strategy and the further commission of Temple Mercenaries. Ares and Mikael pursue and defeat the red-eyed leader but discover he is older brother to the man Ares seeks - Kiberos, the man who killed Ares' master. Kiberos shows himself but only to taunt Ares to make himself "worthy to kill". Soon afterwards, Mikael receives word from his family, and he resigns from Temple Mercenaries to return home. Ares, Baroona and Gohue give their comrade a fond farewell. Baroona overheard the truth of Mikael's royal lineage, but neither Mikael nor the others know this. Mikael is the prince of Isirus, his father is on his deathbed, and his uncle has started a coup. Mikael stops the coup, kills his uncle then considers what he will do next. He remembers the appeal of Chronos and decides to take it and then the world. |
| Ares: The apprentice of the deceased Kiron, famous Master Swordsman of Chronos. Kiron, who had lost his sight, was murdered by the Red-Eyed Swordsman. Kiron’s sword was taken by the Swordsman and Ares lost an eye to him as well. Ares is devoted to avenging his master’s death by killing the Red Eyed Swordsman and taking back his sword. It is shown that Ares' real name is Sebastian but he lost his memories when he fell off a cliff. He became B-rank after the first mission with his companions, and he is now an A-rank. Ares is shown to be light-hearted and friendly in normal situations. His personality is somewhat similar to One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy in that he is often goofy and cracks jokes with friends and is also shown to be somewhat simple minded ( exemplified by the fact that he only joined the Tample Mercenaries because they offered food for members). In battle Ares is deadly. His fighting prowess is so that very few people are shown to be able to stand their ground against him in battle. He almost always fights with a sword but is also shown to be quite capable of incapacitating weaker opponents various unarmed attacks (usually kicks or elbow strikes). His swordplay and his fighting style in general incorporates quick, hard strikes and numerous acrobatic maneuvers used for both dodging attacks and adding power to his own attacks. He can also be very resourceful in serious fights and will use the environment to his advantage, be it jumping off walls, dropping a chandelier on an enemy or taking swords from defeated soldiers to continue fighting after his sword breaks. Ares says that he is 18 years old (however, several months have passed in the storyline since he said this). | ||
| Mikael: The heir to the throne of Isiris. He has come to Chronos to experience war and the life of commoners. He is well educated and intelligent, understanding many strategies used in battles and wars. He is also the most bloodthirsty of the three main characters. He became B-rank after his first mission, and became A-rank after the war with Minos. He is the murderer of Cygnus, after encountering him alone, without a weapon, and on the brink of death (as a result of Cygnus' previous battle with Ares). He quit the Tample mercenaries after the war with Daraakians to go back to Isiris, as his uncle has started a revolution that he wishes to quell. It is shown that his father, the king, is sick and that Mikael seems to be in charge of him. He has formed an elite squad of assassins (including Carnival) along with an army that are completely loyal to him. He began his invasion of Chronos with a surprise attack to destroy the Temple mercenaries. For the most part Micheal is only nice to his close friends. He is not very sociable and sometimes Ares and Baroona are put off by this. Even so, those three are close friends even after he betrayed them Ares still considers him a friend. As mentioned earlier, he is also very bloodthirsty. He is merciless to his enemies (exemplified by a time when after the battle has already been won he drags an injured, unarmed enemy soldier by the foot to kill him as he desperately tries to crawl away and begs for mercy only to be stopped by a commanding officer who orders him to stop several times) and is even shown murdering an ally wounded on the battlefield who was begging for help. Mikael is around the same age as Ares (18 or 19). | ||
| Baroona: A former Daraakian Slave. He escaped the Radink Alliance after becoming the champion gladiator. He is the only one of the three who does not use a sword. He fights with two daggers tied to the ends of a metal chain, a weapon given to him by his former master who was also a Daraakian gladiator. He also became B-rank after his first mission, and has risen to A-rank at present. Though a soldier, Baroona is a calm and kind person and maybe perceived as the personal "plug" in the middle of his two friends' extreme personalities. He usually avoids unnecessary fighting and is generally more sensible than Ares and more sane than Micheal. In battle he is calm and calculating and knows many ways to use his trademark chain daggers to disarm and kill enemies. He becomes incensed when others speak derogatorily of Daraak. He smokes often. Baroona is the same age as Mikael and Ares (18 or 19 years old). | ||
